Uppsala Travel Centre - a summary in English

The Uppsala Travel Centre project is composed of several different sub-projects. Here is a summary of each of them.

The railway station

A new railway station is being built. The station will have five new platforms and new tracks. In this way, more trains can be handled, safety increased and travellers will have more access and even an improved environment.

The platforms will partially have roofs and will be extended. From Strandbodgatan there will be a new entrance with elevators and stairs.

The Central passage

A totally new walkway and bicycle path – Central passage – has been built underneath the tracks. The new passage is located south of the station and has elevators and escalators to the platform with a partially covered entrance way.

The new passage makes connections to the train and between the eastern and western sides of the city easier.

Strandbodgatan

Strandbodgatan is the site of extensive work and therefore must be closed to vehicular traffic for four years from September 3rd 2007 until December 2011. However, pedestrians and bicyclists can get through.

Strandbodgatan will be extended to four lanes with pedestrian and bicycle paths on both sides.

Three new railroad bridges are being built for the regular train traffic and one for the railroad museum, Lennakatten.

Strandbodgatan will receive a new entrance to the platforms with elevators and stairs.

Stationsgatan

Stationsgatan is a new street laid out between Strandbodgatan and the crossing Storgatan/Norrtäljegatan.

Along the street are entrances into the Travel Centre as well as automobile and bicycle parking.

Stationsgatan opened September 3rd 2007 when Strandbodgatan was closed.

Railroad museum train - Lennakatten

The railroad museum train, Lennakatten, receives a better berth in the new Travel Centre nearer the Station.

The railroad museum receives a new station on the east side of the railway yard closer to the large station than it is today.

During the construction phase, however, the station is temporarily moved to an area near Bergsbrunnaplan. The station with parking for the trains and any turning spur for locomotives will remain in this area.

The railroad museum will then have a new bridge over Strandbodkilen just east of the crossing with Bergsbrunnagatan.

Stadshusgatan

A new street for buses – Stadshusgatan – between City Hall and Bäverns gränd, parallel with Kungsgatan – has been built between Kungsgatan and the railroad station.

Southbound buses will drive on the new street for buses that will have stops on the western side. Northbound buses use Kungsgatan instead.

Kungsgatan

Bus traffic increases on Kungsgatan with new bus stops. The northbound buses will drive on Kungsgatan which will have bus stops on the east side of Kungsgatan.

The Kungsgatan’s western sidewalk is widened and has a row of trees. Private automobiles will continue to be permitted.

Parking garage

A parking garage is built under each part of The Arch. In the northern end a garage for the public has 370 parking places and in the southern end, parking is mainly for those who have enterprises in the building. The north garage opened in December 2007.

Bicycle parking

Several new bicycle parking areas are being built in the new Uppsala Travel Centre.

New bicycle parking is being created along the new Stationsgatan.

In the park to be laid where the bus stops used to be there will be many new places for bicycles to park. There are also plans for a garage for around 1 000 bicycles.

New residential blocks

On the eastern side of the new Stationsgatan, a whole new residential block will be built in an attractive central location.

The Arch/Uppsala Entré

The Arch on the east side of the station will be a new feature of Uppsala’s landscape. The Arch is a five-storey building divided in two pieces. In the southern part there will be shops and offices. A hotel will be located in the northern part
